Raising Silkworms
Raising Silkworms
In 2022, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya visited Ban Nawha in Nakhon Phanom province to meet local weavers and bestow the royal guidance of the “Nawha Model,” which aims to empower locals to restore the cultivation of indigenous silkworms to enhance a sustainable supply of materials for their entire silk production.
Accordingly, the villagers of Ban Nawha have embraced “Sustainable Fashion” by planting mulberry trees and raising silkworms in baskets and stacked trays beneath their homes. This method optimizes space and resources, yielding higher volumes of quality silk. Notable silkworm breeds include the indigenous “local Thai silk,” known for their yellow cocoons, and “Nang Tui silk,” known for their distinct smooth and silky threads with distinctive shell colors on the outside and dark yellow on the inside.
