Indigo Vat

The objectives of “Sustainable Fashion,” a royal initiative of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, are aligned with the principles of Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) that aim to raise awareness on harmful side effects of chemical fabric dyes on weavers and wearers. HRH The Princess encouraged Donkoi’s Indigo Weaving Group to infuse contemporary elements into their local wisdom of traditional indigo-dyeing techniques using natural materials for dyeing fiber threads to create more environmentally friendly products through a cleaner process.
Indigo is extracted from the stems and leaves of the indigo tree. This process involves soaking and fermenting the leaves, containing indican. During this process, the indican breaks down into indoxyl. When indoxyl interacts with oxygen in the air, it oxidizes and transforms into indigo blue sediment, an essential precursor used for making indigo dye water.
