Miracle Yarns
As the main agency charged with fostering public participation and learning, and with promoting a stable and sustainable grassroots economy, the Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior, has implemented its Operational Plan (2023 – 2027), which focuses on enabling communities to manage themselves effectively, while creating jobs and consistent income for local people.
In line with this mission, the Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior has also launched the Creative Innovation to Develop Products for Sustainable Fashion Projects (Future Fashion 2025). This project emphasizes the importance of natural yarns– both plant- and animal-based – as a key foundation of Thai textile craftsmanship. The project spans the entire production process, upstream to downstream, by promoting knowledge and supporting innovative design. The aims are to modernize and add unique value to local fabrics in response to contemporary consumer needs; to boost product development under this initiative; and to compete in international markets.
The project also embraces the “Fun with Thai Fabric” royal initiative of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, alongside the concept of “Sustainable Fashion,” as key guiding principles. These ideals serve to re-imagine Thai fabrics and handicrafts, and to transform traditional designs into contemporary works that fit perfectly with modern lifestyles.
To help drive this strategy and to ensure tangible outcomes, the Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior has published Miracle Yarns, which collates knowledge about natural yarns, Thai local craftsmanship, and processing techniques. The book is also a showcase for innovative contemporary textile products from the participating designers and entrepreneurs.
From concept to completion, this project is driven by the “Fun with Thai Fabric” Working Group, comprising leading Thai textile experts, top national designers, natural dye specialists, academics, and professionals in related fields, who are tasked with sharing their knowledge and skills. This integration of expertise will enable Thai traditional crafts to move from local markets to the modern global stage.
The mission to promote Thai textiles as a powerful but sustainable creative industry is aligned with the country’s development plan and the goal of achieving a better quality of life for all. the Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior sincerely hopes that Miracle Yarns will serve as a key driver in promoting Thai wisdom, enhancing the value of community products, creating jobs and income, and strengthening the grassroots economy for a prosperous and sustainable future.
