Natural Dye Batik

Natural Dye Batik

The Natural Dye Batik fabrics from the “Batik Model to the Global Market” project, led by Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior, reflect fabric production processes closely aligned with HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya’s “Sustainable Fashion” initiative. Each Batik fabric tells the story of the community contributing to its beauty. Created from natural fiber threads and dyes, the Batik uniquely reflects the progressive steps towards a sustainable economy and self-reliance within each community.
The characteristic of Natural Dye Batik is the prints drawn with a canting, which is used to draft lines to block watercolors from mixing on the fabric. Typically, Batik prints conceptualize local cultures through illustrations of geometric shapes, botanicals, animals, and more.
Local Batik makers have developed natural dye extraction techniques from plants in their community, yielding distinctive shades from turmeric, Nipa palm, Tropical Almond leaves, Indian Trumpet flowers, Lor tree, coffee leaves, mango tree leaves, Cassia leaves, Indigo, Ginseng, Samae tree, and Mangrove tree. Moreover, the fabric serves multiple purposes, from decor to handkerchiefs, scarves, and dresses.
