Each community has signature textile patterns that speak of its heritage, and the same holds true for other crafts including ceramics, niello, lacquerware, woodcarving, and more. All are symbolic of Thai workmanship and artistry passed down through generations.<\/p>\n

The Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior has a mandate to promote and expand upon the Fun with Thai Fabric and Sustainable Fashion initiatives of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, and, with that mission in mind, organizes projects of far-reaching value. The Kraam International Symposium 2025 is held with the aim of exchanging knowledge with international experts, artisans, and designers; to integrate insights across related fields; and to bring greater recognition to Thai textiles and handicraft products on the global stage.<\/p>\n

Although the title of the symposium features the name kraam (indigo), its focus is not confined to indigo dyeing, but rather the enduring craft heritage of the nation and the wider region. The program is organized into daily themes, and includes events such as the Vogue Designers\u2019 Forum \u2013 to explore the origins and development of traditional textiles and component skills such as natural dyeing, indigo dyeing, and silk and cotton weaving. Presented by leading designers, the forum features creative processes rich in personal identity.<\/p>\n

The symposium also includes workshops that showcase the history of indigo dyeing, emphasizing the meticulous skills involved in preparing materials, building various types of indigo vats, and the actual dyeing of cloth and yarn. Internationally renowned fashion editors from three culturally rich countries \u2013 Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines \u2013 will offer perspectives and exchange in-depth views on how fashion can enrich cultural heritage and advance community sustainability.<\/p>\n

During the symposium, the WWD M\u00e9tiers d\u2019Art Forum will convene with leading Thai artists and designers to illustrate how \u2013 through collaborations with international houses \u2013 the nation\u2019s cultural heritage and craftsmanship can help redefine the idea of modern luxury. With input from prominent figures in fashion and haute couture, the discussion explores how Thai artisanal work can be adapted to meet this challenge.<\/p>\n

This international academic symposium underscores two issues of interest to the global fashion industry: the value of traditional artistry in today\u2019s world, and, more particularly, the utilization of indigo in modern textiles and products.
